HEY! DON'T THROW THAT AWAY!

Did I get your attention? My apologies for a long absence from posting. I want to thank some of you out there for your kind comments about some of my posts. I hope something I say or paint gives someone an insight or inspiration they need.       As to my title about this post, the other day I was going over some old pictures looking for something to possibly paint. I found some old poorly exposed photo's of my daughter when she was 4 or 5. Back then I did'nt have Photoshop,or a computer for that matter. I scanned the picture into my computer and played around with different things in Photoshop to improve the image. The image to the above left is my painting from the photo.                    My point here is if you work from photo's ( and most everyone must at some point) Don't EVER throw any away.Something that might not appeal to you right now may be just what you need 10 years later. Plus with the changes in technology these days, who knows. I took that picture 10 years ago with a film camera! Imagine that. I did have color television by then though. Happy painting!

More Photoshop

Hi everyone. Have'nt posted anything in a while, its been so hot here in Texas it kinda drains your energy. I have lately been exploring a function in Photoshop, the Posterize  button. I usually take a photo I'm about to use for a painting and load it in Photoshop and just try different adjustments to see if anything clicks my creativity. Here's a recent commission I did before any trickery.

Cute girl. Somewhere in my travels I tried the posterize function with this result.

I'm not sure if it really comes across on your computer screen but this function seems to kind of divide the shadows, halftones and lights into a more noticeable grouping. Also the color divisions become easier to see. Many portraits I view seem to suffer from lack of enough imagination in color. In cool north light the shadows would be warm, the halftones cool, the lights warm and the highlights cool again. This seems to be what this function in Photoshop is doing. Give it a try. Hey, if Rembrandt were alive today he would be a computer geek. Next post I'll try and post the finished portrait.

Am I done yet?

Do you wonder when your painting, like I do, should I keep working this or stop. Do you wonder " If I strengthen this or subdue that , would this painting be better? I've had a small painting tacked up on my studio wall for probably a year now. I was cleaning the other day and noticed it and thought, maybe I should work this a little more. What do I have to lose right! This is the painting before rework.

I have always liked this but something seemed kind of dull. So away I went. This is also a good idea if your kind of dried up on picture ideas as we all can become. Its a learning experience at any rate. Anyway, this is what I did after about two hours.

What do you think? I thought it was an improvement. This painting is up for bid on Ebay. To view or bid Click here. Thanks for looking.
